THE ARTIST

In the 1970s, Cambodia’s lacquer industry declined due to the growing use of synthetic paints, which led to the disappearance of natural resins in traditional handicrafts. But in 1998, the European Union entrusted master lacquer artist Eric Stocker with reviving this lost heritage. Drawing on expertise from prestigious ateliers, Stocker has played a pivotal role in restoring Cambodia’s rich artistic legacy.

Lacquering was discovered on a boat in Japan 9,000 years ago and later spread through Southeast Asia as a decorative and protective craft. Artisans used tree sap to hand-apply lacquer, waterproofing objects and boats.

Committed to preserving age-old artisan traditions, Eric Stocker continuously refines his techniques and shares his expertise to empower local Cambodian craftsmen, including hearing-impaired locals at his Siem Reap workshop.

The art of Lacquer and texture crafts consciously respect the environment by using only natural and vegetal materials to create the highest end quality art. The tree sap he is using comes from Kampong Thom Province.

THE EXHIBITION

When asked about his inspiration, Eric Stocker replied: ”In 1976, I gifted my mother a Carré Hermès scarf—a timeless piece of elegance which is a symbol of art and craftsmanship for me. Equally, I find endless beauty in the lotus fields surrounding my home, where nature teaches me patience, texture, and grace”. ”The Lotus Collection” is Eric Stocker’s latest compositions.
